Sometimes, the major cause is genetic mutations (changes in DNA), as with diseases directly affecting the heart muscle or some birth defects involving the heart. But the most common form of heart disease is narrowing of the blood vessels that nourish the heart, and in this case the major causes also include smoking, too much fat in the diet, high blood pressure, being overweight, and not getting enough exercise. So, the most common form of heart disease is largely preventable!
