Question: Some people believe that if the heart fails, an artificial one could be better. Some say we should just cure it. What do you put your opinion on?
I happen to be in Florida this week for a major heart research meeting, with 15,000 doctors and scientists. One of the special awards went to a French surgeon who is the world leader on the artificial heart. He has put it into three patients so far, and they have lived for around 200 days with only a mechanical heart to pump their blood! So, having something that is practical, safe, and persistent is still a very long way off, but very important to study.
I would not want to bet which kind of “new” heart will be best, thirty years from now.
