I have been going to Japan once or twice a year for a long time, to lecture at their major heart research meetings. Now, many of my former students, who came over from Japan to train in my lab, have laboratories of their own, and the reunions are always very special. Most of them were just in London, for a European heart meeting, and I had the chance to return some of the hospitality. I like the ultra-modern aspects of Tokyo (glittering high-rise buildings, lots of neon, lots of tech), and the ultra-traditional aspects of Kyoto (beautiful temples and gardens). Best of all was when I took my teenage son with me!!
